Choosing a dental provider and orthodontist for you or your child can be daunting. How do you know where you will be comfortable or which provider has the most experience? • First, collect information. Ask your dentist for a referral and ask your friends whom they recommend. Collect the names of friendly orthodontists in your community who have good reputations.
• Second, check the caliber and experience of the orthodontists. We suggest you choose an orthodontist who is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) like Dr. Sam Finkleman. ABO certification is a rigorous process. The ABO sets the standards of care for excellence in orthodontics.
• Third, schedule a complimentary consultation. Meet the orthodontist and their team to make sure that they are a good fit. Over the course of your treatment, you will need to visit your orthodontist approximately every six weeks. It is important that you are comfortable with their office environment and that it is conveniently located.
• Fourth, discuss goals and options. During your complimentary consultation, discuss your goals, such as correcting your bite and straightening your teeth. Ask the orthodontist about the different treatments that he or she offers and the technology that he or she uses. Discuss whether braces or clear aligners (e.g., Invisalign) is right for you. And, ask about costs and treatment times. Consider whether the orthodontist answered your questions clearly. Do not hesitate to reach out with follow-up questions.
• Fifth, compare your options. When you are comparing your options, be sure to keep in mind the caliber of the orthodontist, the office environment and location, the types of treatments offered, costs, and treatment time. You may also consider whether the orthodontist has convenient office hours.
