Why Do Orthodontists Charge Difference Fees for Braces?

Not All Treatments Are Equal

Orthodontic fees are based on your specific treatment. At your initial visit, your orthodontist will take photographs, review x-rays, and perform a comprehensive exam in order to establish a diagnosis. Then, your orthodontist will present you with treatment options to meet your specific goals and needs. These treatment options may include different treatment modalities, such as braces or clear aligners (e.g., Invisalign), and vary in treatment time and cost. The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on complexity. In providing you a cost estimate, your orthodontist will consider the severity of your malocclusion (i.e., the misalignment of teeth and bites), the treatment modality, and expected treatment time. Thus, the cost of treatment varies from person-to-person.

Scenarios to Consider

Consider this example: Patient A has a severe overbite, an impacted tooth, and crowded teeth. Their goal is to fully correct their bite and improve their smile. Patient B has a small diastema (i.e., a gap between the upper two front teeth) and a couple crooked teeth. Their goal is only to improve their smile. Multiple types of orthodontic appliances, over a longer period of time, may be needed for Patient A. While both patients may be treated with braces, it will likely cost more for Patient A than Patient B because of the complexity of the treatment.
